SONY 24MM F1.4 GM REVIEW

I have owned and used the Sony FE 24mm f1.4 GM lens almost since it was released. It’s a lens that is a staple to my work and always with me to any wedding or event. More than that, it is the lens I typically turn to for video or travel photography. The lens is light, sharp, offers fantastic bokeh, and doesn’t require too much correction in post. Many refer to this lens as an “environmental” lens, which is a really nice difference to say a 35mm.

Here’s my review of the Sony FE 24mm f1.4 GM lens:

BOKEH

The Sony FE f1.4 GM lens is renowned for its beautiful bokeh, which is characterised by its smooth and creamy blur. The lens has a wide maximum aperture of f/1.4, which allows for excellent low-light performance and shallow depth of field, which produces a pleasing out-of-focus background.

This design helps to minimise chromatic aberration, distortion, and flare, which results in images with a smooth and natural bokeh.

The lens also features a circular 11-blade aperture, which helps to produce a circular and pleasing bokeh effect. This is particularly useful when wanting to separate a subject, where the background blur is an essential part of the composition.

CONCLUSION

Overall I absolutely love the Sony FE f1.4 GM lens. Its been on a real journey with me covering weddings and events over the years. I wouldn’t call this lens a portrait lens despite the bokeh and the f1.4, but more of an environmental perspective. I have been asked why I don’t use more zooms. I just find prime lenses to be more fun than anything. You need to move your feet and really think about the shot with a prime. Plus that 1.4 aperture brings lovely separation.

If you are on the look out for a premium, widish lens for say documentary work, video or just wanting to capture your travels then I highly recommend this lens.
