When planning your wedding, one of the most important decisions you’ll make is choosing the right wedding photographer. After all, these photos will be the lasting memories of your special day. With so many photographers out there, it can be overwhelming to know where to start. That’s why we’ve compiled this guide to help you choose the perfect wedding photographer for your big day.

  • Start by researching photographers in your area.
The first step in finding the right wedding photographer is to do your research. Start by looking for photographers in your area, and read their reviews and testimonials. This will give you an idea of their reputation and what their previous clients have said about their work.
  • Look at their portfolio.
Once you’ve found some potential photographers, take a look at their portfolio. This will give you a sense of their style and the types of weddings they’ve photographed in the past. Make sure their style matches the vision you have for your own wedding photos. My style has a documentary approach, so rather than a handful of posed photos I always aim to capture the story of the day.
  • Consultation.
Arrange a consultation with the photographer, this can be by meeting with them in person, a phone call or a more popular choice these days is a video chat over Zoom. This will provide an opportunity to determine if you feel comfortable with the photographer and if they are suitable for you. By nature I am a laid back and relaxed person, and many of my wedding clients have commented on this. I certainly don’t shout and order people around at a wedding.
  • Ask about their experience.
When it comes to wedding photography, experience is key. Ask the photographer about their experience shooting weddings, how many they’ve done, and if they’ve worked at your venue before. This will give you an idea of their expertise and whether or not they’ll be able to handle any unexpected challenges that may arise.
  • Discuss pricing and packages.
Compare packages and pricing from different photographers to locate one that fits your budget. Inquire about the number of coverage hours, package inclusions, and flexibility options. For me I prefer to offer a bespoke package. Location and time needed is all factored in. Typically though my shorter day packages start at £550.
  • Ask about their backup plan.
No matter how well you plan, unexpected things can happen. Ask the photographer what their backup plan is in case of equipment failure, illness, or any other unforeseen circumstances. You want to make sure that your wedding memories will be captured no matter what. 2020-2021 and covid caught out a lot of photographers or even videographers as they had no backup plan if they caught the dreaded virus. I actually covered several weddings during that period for fellow photographers who fell ill. I personally have 2-3 photographers I can turn to if I cannot attend.
  • Consider their communication and responsiveness.
Wedding planning can be stressful, and you want a photographer who will be responsive and easy to communicate with. Make sure you feel comfortable reaching out to them with any questions or concerns you might have.
  • Availability and booking.
Confirm that the photographer is available on your wedding date and able to commit to your special day. Take action immediately and pay a deposit to secure your preferred photographer. As a rule I receive an enquiry on a daily basis, and I limit myself to around 24 weddings per year. If I don’t hear back from the first enquiry message I then free up the date after 72 hours.
  • Booking deposit.
Ask the photographer about their booking deposit. Some photographers require at least 50% upfront to lock a date. For me I just ask for a £100 deposit, once paid via bank transfer I then lock the date. All payments made will receive a receipt.

Choosing the right wedding photographer can be daunting, but by following these tips, you’ll be well on your way to finding the perfect photographer for your special day. Remember, these photos will be your lasting memories, so take the time to find the right photographer who will capture them beautifully.
